About Us

Tom Hanson along with his parents, Dick and Chucky Hanson, own and run Equity Ranch.  It went from 100 acres of brush and trees to a breeding and training facility and their home.  It is also a well-known stopping point for anyone looking for top quality stock.

Tom has been in the horse industry for years.  He is a farrier by trade and considered to be the best in the business, traveling all over the U.S. shoeing for the top halter and pleasure trainers in the industry.  Over the years, he has bought and sold top quality horses in his travels.  Equity Ranch has become a regular destination for people to stop and shop for their next champion!

Tom in his endeavors to be a producer of even better stock purchased AQHA Stallion "Protect Your Assets" along with long-time friend Fred Bates, creating the "Protect Your Asset Partnership". This horse’s great conformation, movement, trainability, and siring strength was just what they were looking for to continue Equity Ranch’s commitment to the improvement of the equine industry. In late 2006, Tom hired trainers Russell Harris and Kelly Lind to manage Equity Ranch. 

Russell and Kelly have worked for the top trainers in the industry with the desire to learn the art of a horse’s education. In 1993, the best trainers and horses were in Texas, so that was where Russell wanted to be.  After a phone conversation with the legendary Doug Lilly, Russell jumped at the chance to learn and work for the best.  Then when Mark Shaffer bought Lilly’s ranch, Russell decided to stay with the ranch and work for Mark Shaffer Show Horses.  Together they won numerous ApHC World and National Championships as well as NSBA and AQHA Futurities.

Kelly went to work for Mark and Russell in 1997.  Being raised in Appaloosas, this was the chance of a lifetime to work for the top trainer in the ApHC.  Kelly will tell you she just kept her mouth shut and her eyes and ears open.  When it was Kelly’s turn to step up to the plate, she was able to make them proud winning the ApHC Reserve World Champion Senior Western Pleasure and 4^th at the National Appaloosa Show.

Venturing just around the block to Pilot Point, Texas, Russell next worked for the one and only Simon’s Show Horses.  There Lynn and Andrea Simons allowed Russell to expand and develop his own program.  The Simons and Russell were able to rack up Championships that year at the APHA World Show, including the first World Champion Two-year-old Western Pleasure horse by the Hall Of Fame stallion Zippos Sensation.

Realizing they still wanted to learn more, they went to work for Patty Woodrick and Randy Leeper.  For Russel and Kelly, Patty and Randy put the reasoning and explanation to what they do. There they were able to work with the great, Jerry and Marty Stanford.  Seeing their accomplishments and success at the highest levels instilled a belief in the education of the horse. 

This combination built the foundation and philosophy behind Russell and Kelly’s program.  “The education of the horse and owner is the key to success.”  Fundamentals and a solid foundation have led them to Top 5 and 10 horses at the All American Quarter Horse Congress, NSBA Wins, Futurity Wins, as well as ApHC World and National Championship horses.
